Not sure which position to apply for? Here are a few distinctions between Resident Counselor, Discovery Group Leader (DGL) and Session Counselor:
Resident staff (resident counselors and DGLs) are committed to working all summer long and are at least 18 years old. We hope that our resident staff, both counselors and DGLs, will help mentor our counselor training participants (CTP). Resident staff may have experience or not, but everyone is committed to learning and strengthening our program. Resident staff are also eligible, once hired, to receive Red Cross first aid/CPR/AED certification and Red Cross lifeguard certification.
Session staff are employed per-session rather than all summer long- what you work is based on your availability and our staffing needs. Session staff are at least 16 years old. All session staff must also sign up for Counselor Training. Successful participation and completion of Counselor Training results in a work agreement! If you’re a first-time CTP, come ready to learn! If you’re a returning CTP, we hope you’ll help strengthen the program with your experience and help mentor other CTPs.

Please email ali@huston.org if you have any questions, concerns, or need technical assistance.
COVID-19: As of 5/18/2023, staff are no longer required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as is stated in the job descriptions, though we do encourage vaccination against COVID-19. Staff are required to produce a negative COVID-19 test when they arrive to work.
Please make sure you’re registered for Counselor Training if you’re applying as a Session Counselor! You can register on the Summer Camp page of our website.
All Huston Summer Staff should familiarize themselves with our philosophy and goals, as well as our personnel policies.
