Not sure which position to apply for?
Here are a few distinctions between Resident Staff and Session Counselors:
Resident staff (Resident Counselors and Discovery Group Leaders) are committed to working all summer long and are at least 18 years old. We hope that our resident staff, both Counselors and DGLs, will help mentor our Counselor Training Participants (CTPs) and are committed to learning and strengthening our program. Resident staff are also eligible, once hired, to receive Red Cross first aid/CPR/AED certification, Red Cross lifeguard certification, Level 1 archery certification, and Low Ropes Challenge Course training.
Session counselors are employed per-session rather than all summer-long — what you work is based on your availability and our staffing needs. Session staff are at least 16 years old (or going into 11th grade). All session staff must also register for Counselor Training. Successful participation and completion of Counselor Training results in a work agreement! If you’re a first-time Counselor Training Participant, come ready to learn! If you’re a returning CTP, we hope you’ll come ready to strengthen your own skills, learn new techniques, and help sustain the program with your experience along with helping mentor other CTPs.
For more distinctions between our summer staff positions, please read through the job descriptions found below.
Please make sure you’re registered for Counselor Training if you’re applying as a Session Counselor! You can register on the Summer Camp page of our website.
All Huston Summer Staff should familiarize themselves with our personnel policies and philosophy & goals.
